Because I’m Glutton for Punishment…

One of the benefits (or drawbacks) of working in a library is I can peruse the shelves at my leisure.  As I work in a school library, I usually stock up on books to take with me over the summer.  And here you see that I can GUARANTEE you my house will be unsuitable for guests this summer being this is what I plan on taking home…

Dream Thieves (The Raven Boys #2, Raven Cycle)

ImageSeptember 17th marked the beginning of my fall book extravaganza with the release of Maggie Stiefvater‘s second book in The Raven Boys’  series!  I was SOO psyched for this book to come out!  And while it didn’t disappoint, it is definitely not for everybody.  When we last left Blue Sargent and the Aglionby boys, Ronan has just admitted that he has an interesting ability: he can take things out of his dreams.  And that set up the whole of this second offering.  Ronan and his dreams take the driver’s seat, and much like Ronan himself, those dreams are twisted and scary, especially to Ronan.    The main narrators of this book are Ronan and a hit man, the mysterious Mr. Gray.  Ronan is trying to better understand his dreams and Mr. Gray is looking for the elusive Greywarren, what it is he is not exactly sure.  As you might expect, most people’s dreams are strange, surreal which is why this book may be an acquired taste.  Ronan’s dreams are seriously creepy and make for very interesting plot points. We also get to know Blue’s “family” a bit better.  Maura, Calla and Persephone bring much needed laughter and gravity to the situation.  The Blue-Gansey-Adam triangle, while still there, takes a back seat.  This of course is my favorite aspect of the series!  Which one is her true love?  Will they find a way to get past Blue’s destiny?  Where is Glendower???  Seriously, if you read the first one, you will enjoy this one.  Stiefvater uses a rotating point of view, even showing us the POV of Mr. Gray.  I like this, being able to be in everyone’s head and I am sure it is a difficult task to undertake but she pulls it off.  The banter between Blue’s family of psychics is funny and endearing but I really am loving the Blue/Gansey interaction.  It appears the third one won’t be out for another year so if you have no patience for waiting, you may want to hold off as the ending is a MAJOR cliffhanger!  ARGH!!
